a
Keyword Search

Use this type of search when you look for a book/music/movie through the Search Box provided on the top navigation bar. You can enter one or more keywords using any combination of the author's/artist's name, the title, and/or a subject heading. If you use more than one keyword, our search engine will restrict the results to items that each match all the keywords you enter.

Here are some examples using Keyword Search:

  • For Books

  • Entering "Peter Norton" will get you books by and about Peter Norton.

  • Entering "Kotler" will get you books by and about Philip Kotler as well as books by other authors named Kotler.

  • Entering "medical physiology" will find The Textbook of Medical Physiology or other such matching results.

  • Entering "Addison Wesley" will find all books published by them.

  • For Music

  • Entering "davis, miles" in the Artist field finds titles by Miles Davis.

  • Entering "road" in the Album Title field finds titles with the word "road" (e.g. Abbey Road by The Beatles, The Road to Ensenada by Lyle Lovett, etc.).

  • Entering "exile" in the Album Title field and "stones" in the Artist field finds Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones.

  • Entering "warner" in the Label field finds titles on the Warner Brothers label.

  • For Movies

  • Entering "women" in the Movie Title field finds titles with the word "women" (e.g. What Women Want

  • Entering "warner" in the Label field finds titles on the Warner Brothers label.

Author/Artist Search

You can choose among two types of Author/Artist Searches by clicking the buttons below the Author/Artist field. If you don't choose one, you will be searching by Last, First Name (or Initials). The types of Author/Artist Searches are listed from narrowest (most strict) to broadest (least strict).

For authors/Artists with multiple last names, make sure you use a comma between the last names and the first name (e.g., Douglas E., Comer). To search without a first name or initials, type the complete last name, followed by a comma (e.g., E. Comer,). If this does not find all the books/albums by the author/artist, you might also try searching by the last word of the author's/artist's last name (e.g., Comer).

Exact Name:
Enter the name exactly the way it appears on the book/album. You can enter it First name Last name or Last name, First name. Use this to narrow a search for an author/artist with a common name, such as Ravi R. Sastry. But remember, if you specify "S.K Sarkar," you will not find books that are in our database under S. Kumar Sarkar.

Last, First Name (or Initials):
You may enter the author's/artist's name in any of the ways listed below:
Last name, First name(s): Douglas E. Comer
Last name, First initial(s): Comer, D. E.
First name, Last name: Philip Kotler
First initial, Last name: P. Kotler
Last name: Sarkar

The search will find items in our database under names that seem to match your search specification. If you specified "S. Kumar Sarkar," you might find items by Sarkar, S.K. Sarkar, and S. Kumar Sarkar.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to search for items with two or more authors who share a last name, such as Richard Stevens and Marcella Stevens. Try to search for books using just the last name (e.g., Stevens).

Start of Last Name:
If you can't spell the author's/artist's last name, enter your best guess for the first few letters. For example, "Stev" will find the Computer Science author Richard Stevens, as well as Andreas Stevenson and Charles S. Steve. For authors/artists with multiple last names, enter only the first of the last names or the start of the first last name.

Title Search

You can choose between two types of Title Searches for books, music and movies. If you don't choose one, you will be searching by Title Words.

Title Word(s):
Enter the main words of the title. It's best if you leave out common words such as 'the'. For example, "Clinical Medicine " will find you the popular medicine book.

Start(s) of Title Word(s):
Enter the beginning (three or more letters) of the main words in the title. For example, "Comp Lang " will find books on and about computer languages.

Subject Search

Subject Word(s): Enter one or more words in the subject you want to search for. This search will find books with subjects containing at least one of the words you entered.

Please note: Searching by subject can be tricky. Books may be indexed under more than one subject. Some books in our database are not indexed by subject at all.
If you know the author or title of a book that's similar to the ones you are looking for, look up that book in the catalog. Book entries have lists of subjects at the bottom of the page; follow one of those links to find similar books. You can also search by Subject Words for words or phrases you found in those subject listings.

ISBN Search

ISBN stands for "International Standard Book Number." Every book sold anywhere in the world should have a unique ISBN, meaning you can find any book in the world simply with that one number, which is never duplicated. It's a 10-digit identification system. The ISBN refers to the specific edition (e.g. trade paperback, mass-market paperback) and is usually located on the back of the book and on the copyright page.

Example:
Entering 9812359818 will find Booch's Object Oriented Analysis and Design (2nd Edn). Entering 8120312392, 812031283X will find Stephen P. Robbin's Essentials of Organisational Behaviour, 5th Edn. and Stephen P. Robbin's & Mary Coulter's Management, 5th Edn.

Please note: Search by ISBN can have its limitations. For, instance, not all book publishers in India have books with ISBN coding. Besides, we have thousands of titles in our store, which do not have ISBN codes. To search for titles, we recommend using author/title search for better results.
